4 Skin-Soothing Tips To Banish Dry Skin

(NewsUSA) - If your skin is as dry as the Sahara, it might be easier than you think to bring a much-needed oasis to your epidermis.

Nearly everyone knows the irritating itch or burn of dry skin. The sale of moisturizing products has grown into a booming industry, with close to two-thirds of U.S. adults using moisturizers, according to the market research company Mintel.

Here are some simple steps you can take during your morning routine to make your skin silky and smooth:

1. Rinse thoroughly. When showering or washing your face, be sure to rinse all soap residue off your skin. Soap can leave a thin film that will dry and possibly irritate your skin.

2. Soften while you shave. Shaving can sometimes leave your skin feeling extra dry. In addition to your daily moisturizing routine, you can also try using razors that come with moisturizing features.

For example, Schick® recently introduced a women's razor, the Schick® Intuition® Plus™, that lathers, shaves and moisturizes during the shave with no shaving cream required. It features a three-blade cartridge surrounded by a solid conditioner that is made with milk and honey, aloe and vitamin E, or shea butter - depending on the type you choose. Visit www.schickintuition.com for information.

3. Smooth your skin with honey. Honey has natural properties and vitamins that help alleviate dryness in skin and calm irritation. To cleanse your skin with honey, dissolve two tablespoons of honey into a liter of warm water. Splash over the face for 10 minutes.

You can also give your skin its daily dose of honey via certain products that include it as a moisturizing agent, such as lip balms or facial masks.

4. Moisturize with milk. Cleopatra, the queen of Egypt, reputedly took frequent milk baths to keep her skin looking beautiful. Although she could only guess about the health benefits of milk, we now know that the alpha hydroxy acid derived from milk not only helps to exfoliate old skin, but soothes it as well.

Once a week, mix 2 to 4 cups of milk into your bath and soak for up to 20 minutes. You can also add a few tablespoons of honey and give your dry skin a double treat.

Pre-Nup Pointers For Your Feet

(NewsUSA) - As a bride prepares for her wedding day, there is a long list of things to do. Book the reception hall. Order the wedding cake. Find the perfect dress. And ... take care of her feet.

Many brides will wear shoes that can wreak havoc on their feet. So it's especially important to pamper them before the big day. Here are some tips from the American Podiatric Medical Association on making your wedding a little easier on the feet:

* Pre-nuptial pampering prep: Fill a bucket with warm water and be sure it is large enough for both of your feet to soak. Remove nail polish with non-acetone polish remover. Stimulate foot circulation and warm up your feet by propping one foot at a time on your lap, grasp the foot and begin slowly moving your thumbs from the top of your toes to the bottom of your heel and back. Use a nail clipper to cut toenails straight across. Then, use an emery board to smooth the nail edges.

* Soothing the soles: After soaking, use a pumice stone or non-metal foot file to gently smooth the skin around the heel and the balls and sides of your feet. (For extra soothing and softening, use a scrub and massage your entire foot and lower leg.) Use a fresh towel to pat feet dry and be sure to dry between each toe. Massage a healthy amount of emollient-enriched skin lotion all over your feet to hydrate the skin and increase circulation.

* Finishing toe touches: Remove the moisturizer from your toenails and in between your toes by using soap and water. Apply polish only if you have healthy nails. While it may make your toes look pretty, nail polish locks out moisture and doesn't allow the nail or nail bed to "breathe."

On the eve of your wedding day, lightly wrap cellophane around each foot. The cellophane will act as a makeshift sauna by locking in moisture. By morning, your feet will feel soothingly soft.

People with diabetes should always consult a podiatrist before beginning any foot care regimen. For more tips from the APMA, visit www.apma.org.

Holiday Makeup Tips For a Festive Look

(NewsUSA) - Most women find that the holidays offer them an opportunity to experiment with festive party looks that play with shimmer and color.

This season, there is a return to a classic, feminine look accented with a modern edge. Reds and golds grounded by earthy neutrals and metallics illuminate the face this season. The latest makeup textures and shades allow all women to express their personalities with color and feel completely comfortable doing so.

Before applying even a stitch of makeup, however, it's important to prep your skin. Moisturize your face and neck with Estée Lauder DayWear Plus so makeup glides on. Hide any blemishes with concealer using a shade lighter than your skin tone, and apply a light veil of foundation.

Now decide if you'd rather play up your eyes or your lips. And again, let your mood dictate both your choice and your application technique.

You can easily accentuate your eyes by either smudging them out, or by subtly defining them to create a more polished look that's equally impactful. I always use at least two shades of eye shadow to achieve a happy medium; add a third to heighten the drama if you want.

First, apply eyeliner along your top and bottom lashes, smudging it slightly. Then dust the paler shade of shadow all over your lower lids, from the lash line to the crease. Using the darker shadow, trace over your liner - extending it out a bit for a bolder look - then add some color to the outer corner of the crease. Blend well to eliminate any obvious lines.

Offset your smoldering eyes with a velvety nude lipstick or a nude gloss. Brown- and pink-based nudes will complement most complexions.

In the past, many women found it easier to intensify their eyes. But now, thanks to creamier lip colors and a variety of glosses, red lips don't seem so daunting. You can create a pretty crimson stain, for example, by mixing a small amount of red lipstick with a shimmery gloss, like Estée Lauder Pure Color Crystal Gloss in golden nude. Or be brazen and drench balm-coated lips in deep red, carefully applying the color with a lip brush.

Whatever you choose, just be sure to pick the red that's right for you. Let your wardrobe be your guide. If you wear a lot of cool colors (black, navy, bright white), select a blue-based red. If your closet contains more earth tones, go for an orange red. As for eyes, mascara is always a necessity. My favorite is Estée Lauder Magnascopic Maximum Volume Mascara in black.

Finish off either look with an understated dose of shimmer. To keep it on the sophisticated side, be judicious. Using a big, fluffy brush, lightly dust it high on the cheekbones and down the center of the face only. Estée Lauder Brilliant Shimmer All-Over Powder contains graduated neutral and gold hues that are absolutely gorgeous on all women.

Step Up to Pampered, Healthy Feet

(NewsUSA) - Are you one of the millions of American women who dislike their feet - feet that are dry, cracked and hidden from view?

Step Up to Pampered, Healthy FeetIf you've tried countless creams, medications or pumice stones with little or no relief, or can't afford weekly spa pedicure treatments, don't fret. Relief for your time-worn, cracked tootsies is in sight, right in the comfort of your home.

Dr. Jeffrey Best, a Norwalk, Conn., podiatrist, said that 25 percent of his patients complain about their calluses, corns and dryness. Unattractive feet could be one reason why pedicures have become one of the most popular spa treatments, adding to the booming $11 billion spa industry. And today's pedicures are no longer just about pretty toenails. Dry, cracked and sometimes painful feet and heels not only detract from the foot's appearance, but can also lead to infections.

To achieve a safe and healthy home pedicure, use podiatrist-approved tools. Best recommends using the Artemis Woman Heel Smoother, a new pedicure appliance invented by women that quickly and safely removes dry, cracked, calloused skin.

The Heel Smoother is an affordable, battery-operated, hand-held appliance with a diamond crystal buffing tip that literally leaves unsightly skin in a cloud of dust, transforming your feet. After one use, feet will look healthier and feel smoother. Most importantly, feet will appear attractive in open-toe shoes.

A home pedicure is as easy as closing the bathroom door, lighting candles and getting in the mood. Ready for a home spa pedicure experience? Here's how to do it right:

* Soak your feet in a warm bubble bath to soften dry, stubborn calluses. Follow by drying thoroughly with a soft towel.

* To exfoliate, simply rotate the Heel Smoother across the foot in a circular motion, making sure not to hold it in one spot for more than two seconds.

* Use a brand-new, high-quality emery board to shape and buff the nails.

* Moisturize and protect the skin by using lotion or Topaz Foot Butter. For severely cracked heels or tough calluses, apply foot butter again before bedtime. Wear socks to sleep to keep heels moisturized and soft.

* Now polish toenails. Simply gorgeous!

The Artemis Woman Heel Smoother is available in stores. For more information, visit www.artemiswoman.com or www.heelsmoother.com.

Hot Tips for Hot-Weather Hairstyles
by Olivia Neko

It's blazing hot. The air's thick with humidity and your hair's in total rebellion. What can you do when summer's mighty wrath wreaks havoc with your hair? We consulted with Tippi Shorter, celebrity stylist for Pantene, who gave us the hippest tips of the season. Whether your hair is short or long, wavy, curly or straight, here's how to treat it in superstar fashion even on hot, humid days.

For supershort hair, all you need is the right product. With short hair, whether it's wavy or stick-straight, a body-building gel is all you need to maintain your style and keep your hair from going limp and flat. Take a dime-sized amount of gel, rub between your palms and apply to damp hair starting close to scalp and working your way to the ends. "Short hair loves gel," says Tippi, "because it's not looking for movement as much as control."

For medium-length hair, try twirling. If you work with humidity you can really give your hair some movement and bounce. This summer, loose waves look great, and you can get them by literally twirling sections of damp hair into place with your fingers. Just shampoo and rinse. Part your damp hair in one-inch square sections, apply a defining product to the area and twirl hair in the same direction it naturally wants to go around your finger. Let it set for 10 minutes. When the hair dries you can "comb" your waves lightly with your fingers.

For long hair, try a runway-inspired ponytail. If you have long hair, you can have fun with some of the summer's fashion-inspired ponytails. One of Tippi's favorites is the "Faux Hawk," which looks like a Mohawk from the front, and is pulled into a sleek ponytail in the back. Just take a section of hair from each temple, secure with bobby pins and smooth the rest into a sleek ponytail. Then take the hair that you pulled back from your temples with bobby pins, pull it straight up, tease it to your desired height and secure back down with the pins.

For straight hair, try a wide headband for a Jackie O look. For naturally straight hair, Tippi loves the look of chic thick headbands this season. Just shampoo and dry hair upside down to add body, then choose a band at least two inches wide, place it on top of the head and secure it in the back with a bobby pin if you need to. It's also a good idea to use a clarifying shampoo that won't place extra weight into the hair.

For curly to supercurly hair, try vintage-style hair combs. Vintage-style hair combs add a distinct individuality to your look, and they're great for summer because they replace the need for jewelry. You can find them in hair specialty boutiques and vintage clothing stores. Just wear your hair full and curly and slide a comb in, which smoothes a portion of hair back behind your ear. For supercurly hair, you'll want to use a detangling product after shampooing.
